The Lower Body, with Secrets of the Hamstrings and Extra Love for the Knees
This session will connect to foundations in the feet, knees and hips. We will expand our perspective to include the effect of better actions in the hips and pelvis upon the health of the knees — giving special attention to the knees and the factors that influence their health. See how the hamstrings are not just there to be ‘stretched’ in our practice, but also can be used to help us with our low back and knee issues! This practice will flow through asana, with practical tips for self-awareness and emphasis on actions that bring the greatest positive benefit as well as protection from injury. Location: YogaSource. Price: $55
Saturday, July 16, 9:30am-12:30pm
Threads in the Fabric of the Arms: Beneficial Alignment and Action for the Shoulders
Just as the first session explored foundations in the feet, knees and hips, this all-levels asana practice will include insights into the myofascial ‘threads’ of muscles that govern the hands, wrists, elbows and shoulders, and even impact neck tension. Through the asanas we will look at the way in which the various arm positions and rotations strengthen, lengthen and release tension in these ‘threads’ to relieve chronic pain and increase freedom in movement. This includes not only matters of ‘stiffness’ but also hypermobility! Location: YogaSource. Price: $55
Saturday, July 16, 2:30-5:00
‘Breakthrough:’ The Emergence of a Deeper Yoga of the Whole Self in Both East and West
The session will begin with some simple twists and hip stretches to prepare for mediation and pranayama. The philosophical theme will be an exploration of the parallels between the emergence of Christian mysticism in Europe in the 14th century and the emergence of the spiritual themes of ‘Laya’ Yoga in connection with Hatha Yoga at the same time in India. The focus will be on a re-visioning of the state of samadhi and absorption in the inner Self, as articulated by Meister Eckhart as a Christian mystic as well as its expression in Laya Yoga in terms of Yoga Nidra. Each path illuminates the other, especially on the theme of the ‘Word’ and the attitude of inner listening; and an emphasis will be on the compatibility of these paths.
The session will include guided practice of pranayama, yoga nidra and meditation. Location: YogaSource. Price: $55
Sunday, July 17, 9:30am-12pm noon
The Therapeutic Wisdom of Yoga: Healthy Actions for the Low Back, with an Eye to Working with Sciatic and Sacral Pain
Yoga provides simple and important tools for reducing the kinds of hip and leg pain grouped under the heading of ‘sciatic’ pain, as well as for reducing sacral pain from sacral instability. This session will focus on principles for practice that help us to work constructively in these areas; and at the same time, pointing out the ways in which we often make these problems worse by our ideas of how the poses are ‘supposed’ to be done.
From simple exercises and stretches — and the principles for doing them — we will move into a fuller practice of the fundamental asanas of a yoga practice, with an eye to how we can approach and practice them in the most helpful and beneficial way possible. This will include insights into sequencing, or how asanas should be grouped and practiced with a focus on the key muscles involved.
This will be an all-levels practice, with ‘news-you-can-use’ for the stiff and the flexible alike — with room to practice according to your own comfort level and ability! Location: YogaSource. Price: $55
We will be filming portions of the workshop to promote this community effort.
